Album Rabak…Sukatikaulah diterbitkan buat kali pertama pada 2000. Kelahirannya 21 tahun yang lalu adalah ketika dunia digembar-gemburkan dengan bayangan kesan haywire ‘Millennium Bug’ ataupun keterujaan terhadap kewujudan kereta terbang. Dengan mainan warna merah, hitam, putih dan kelabu, kulit album Rabak..Sukatikaulah yang diterbitkan pada alaf baru itu kelihatan begitu minimalis. Tetapi jika diamati betul-betul kulit album solo kedua penyanyi, komposer dan pemuzik multi-instrumentalist Ajinrabak ini, beliau kelihatan tidak mahu meluncur dengan kereta terbang, sebaliknya mahu meroket dengan attitude dan warna sebenar dirinya yang rebel dan bukan biasa-biasa di dalam arus muzik perdana.
Rabak..Sukatikaulah adalah testimoni kedua yang telah memadamkan episod-episod payau beliau bersama band Black Rose pada awal 90an. Testimoni pertamanya, Dari Ajin Untuk Rakan-Rakan yang diterbitkan pada tahun 1994 terjual melebihi 20,000 unit sekaligus menutup mulut-mulut tempayan sang pengkritik yang ternganga, dan membuktikan bahawa Ajinrabak bukan sahaja boleh menyanyi, malah berbakat sebagai komposer, arranger dan mahir bermain pelbagai alat muzik terutamanya dram.
Dengan mempertaruhkan konsep eksperimental dan sembilan lagu bergenre blues, country, folk, fusion dan melankolik, Rabak…Sukatikaulah pernah mendapat ulasan yang baik di media tempatan dan Singapura berikutan kelainan yang dibawakan. Padat dengan karya yang mendepani masa, album terbitan Arena Rekod dan Pakcik Kayo Publishing ini (kedua-duanya diasaskan oleh Ajinrabak) dikatakan antara album-album artis Malaysia yang menjadi buruan para pengumpul karya-karya vintage yang bernilai tinggi dan dianggap rare pada masa sekarang.
Selain lagu-lagu ciptaan beliau sendiri seperti “Rabak (Jangan Bicara Lagi)”, “Ngkau dan Aku”, “Koboi Brickfields”, “Sukati Kaulah!!”, “Keliru”, “Mengapa (redo)”, “Doa” dan “…Beransur..Cau” (outro), album ini juga menyelitkan sebuah lagu versi cover nyanyian Gaya Zakry yang bertajuk “Kesedaran”. Lagu hit sekitar awal 80an ini adalah ciptaan komposer/penyanyi Khairil Johari Johar dan lirik puitis karya Siti Zaleha Hashim.
“Bagi saya Rabak…Sukatikaulah adalah sebuah album yang sangat bermakna dan very personal. Album ini menyimpan banyak kenangan pahit manis ketika saya nekad memperjuangkan seni dan muzik dengan cara sendiri dan membangunkan home studiosaya, BlackAreaChamber. Kulit album ni berlatarbelakangkan memori-memori yang terakam di studio tu dan kehidupan manusia di sekelilingnya. Contohnya, lukisan yang mana tercetaknya tajuk-tajuk lagu tu ada sentimental valuenya. Lukisan tu terdapat pada satu kotak comel yang menjadi objek pertama yang akan dibuka oleh kawan-kawan yang datang lepak, dan tahu rahsia isinya,” kata Ajinrabak membuka cerita.
“BlackAreaChamber tu adalah ‘port’ kawan-kawan mencari atau berkongsi ilham. Ada yang pernah menganggap studio kompak saya tu satu ‘universiti kehidupan’,” ujar Ajinrabak atau nama sebenarnya Md Zain Jais. Beliau kini lebih selesa menggunakan nama Ajinrabak kerana tidak mahu lagi dikaitkan dengan kisah-kisah lapuk zaman tok kaduk.
BlackAreaChamber yang terletak di Jalan Thamby Abdullah 1, Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur itu pernah menjadi saksi penyanyi ini mencipta magis sebagai penerbit atau tenaga produksi album Motivasi dan Evolusi (KU2), album Sweetened Condensed Tunes For The Broken-Hearted (Spiral Kinetic Circus), album Merciless Mercenary (Break The Silence), album Ganjaran (Republic of Brickfields) juga beberapa single nyanyian Aznil Nawawi dan Amy Mastura.
“Selain diterbitkan oleh syarikat saya sendiri, lagu-lagu yang terdapat di dalam Rabak…Sukatikaulah sarat dengan kisah dan maksud di sebalik falsafah ‘rabak’ yang saya perjuangkan sejak tahun 1987 ketika saya mula-mula berhijrah ke KL. Bagi saya, maksud di sebaliknya adalah untuk mereka yang berfikiran jauh. Dalam kehidupan, rabak adalah satu semangat dan rasa percaya diri yang radikal lagi extreme,” tambah penyanyi ini yang kini mengusahakan kerja-kerja produksi muzik dan video komersil juga korporat di studio RichArtChamber yang terletak di kampung halamannya di Nilai, Negeri Sembilan.
Sejarah pembikinan Rabak…Sukatikaulah
Mengimbau sejarah di sebalik pembikinan Rabak…Sukatikaulah sekitar tahun 1999, Ajinrabak menceritakan bahawa album itu adalah antara karya-karya muzik yang dihasilkan di home studio yang dibangunkannya sedikit demi sedikit dengan menggunakan duit simpanannya, hasil daripada kerja-kerjanya sebagai freelancer. Studio tersebut adalah refleksi bangkitnya semangat beliau yang telah membulatkan tekad menumpukan sepenuh perhatian untuk mendalami bidang produksi muzik dan video selepas meninggalkan Black Rose.
Menganggap dirinya seorang workaholic, Ajinrabak pernah bekerja sebagai illustratordan pengarah seni di agensi-agensi pengiklanan sebelum mencipta nama sebagai penyanyi. Selain aktif menjadi pemuzik separuh masa di kelab-kelab malam, beliau juga ligat membuat kerja-kerja sampingan seperti melukis cover album artis-artis tempatan. Antara hasil sentuhan kreatifnya adalah cover album Doktrin Metos (Masa Scarecrow), 4U2C (4U2C), Motivasi (KU2), Pencarian (Wizards) dan Kami Bersamamu Zaiton Sameon.
Menurut Ajinrabak, proses pembikinan Rabak…Sukatikaulah bermula sebagai salah satu eksperimen selepas beliau membeli VS-880 Digital Studio Workstation. Recorder/mixer/effects processor jenama Roland tersebut menjadi pelengkap studionya pada masa itu.
“Selepas saya nekad untuk go to the extreme dalam muzik, perlahan-lahan saya ditunjukkan-Nya jalan ke arah tu. Saya bermula dengan recorder 4-track dan 8-track terpakai. Masa tu tak ada internet jadi saya banyak belajar sendiri tentang music production dengan menjadikan buku-buku sebagai rujukan. Untuk praktikalnya atau test setting studio, saya banyak bereksperimen secara spontan dengan kawan-kawan yang datang lepak. Album Din Beramboi-Radio 9 (1994), misalnya, adalah hasil kerja saya sendiri yang dirakamkan menggunakan 4-track. Asalnya projek tu hiburan masa lepak-lepak. Talent projek tu hanyalah saya dan kartunis Ujang, tak ada kena-mengena langsung dengan mana-mana demo student U seperti yang didakwa. Tau-tau saja dah dikaitkan sebagai marketing gimmick untuk melariskan majalah! Selama ni ramai yang keliru dan tak tau cerita tentang album tu, betul tak? Apa yang pasti saya tak dapat apa-apa pulangan pun dan syarikat rakaman yang menerbitkannya dah lama berkubur. Tapi, recorder 4-track tu masih saya simpan sampai sekarang,” kata penyanyi yang juga seorang pelukis dan kartunis ini.
Bergelumang dengan seni sejak di bangku sekolah, beliau menjadi kartunis sambilan seawal usia 15 tahun dan pernah digelar kartunis termuda di Malaysia pada tahun 1983 oleh kartunis legenda Rejabhad (majalah Gila-Gila).
“Saya memang sentiasa sibuk dan biasa membuat banyak benda dalam satu-satu masa. Bila saya dapat VS-880 memanglah saya excited sebab saya boleh buat macam-macam dengan hanya berkurung di studio saja. Selama dua bulan saya mengadap recorder tu dan headphone Sony siang dan malam. Kira macam penyuntik semangatlah! Dan macam biasa, saya mengajak kawan-kawan yang lepak di studio untuk bereksperimen. Saya lebih selesa belajar tentang kerja-kerja rakaman muzik dengan cara tu. Rabak..Sukatikaulah ialah projek kedua yang saya siapkan dengan VS-880. Mesin keluaran 1996 ini dah bertaraf dinosaur sekarang. Seorang technician Roland yang saya jumpa beberapa tahun lepas pun terkejut sebab saya masih menyimpannya,” cerita pemuzik self-taught ini.
Rabak Sukatikaulah disiapkan selepas album The Sound of Brickfields Live. Album kompilasi tersebut (juga dianggap must-have album) dirakamkan secara live dan spontan dan menampilkan band Auto Pilot Mode, Nocturna F.C., Bainmarie, I.H.F (Psychosis) dan Supergrassjelly. Band three-piece Supergrassjelly itu dibarisi pengarah filem Azizi ‘Chunk’ Adnan (gitar/vokal), Patt (bass/vokal) dan Ajinrabak sendiri sebagai pemain dram/vokal.
Projek ‘Lockdown’
Selepas 21 tahun, Rabak…Sukatikaulah diterbitkan semula hasil kolaborasi Arena Rekod dan Shah Honda Music (sebagai pengedar). Versi reissue yang dilancarkan secara rasmi pada 25 Jun 2021 dan masih mengekalkan sembilan buah lagu. Jika dulu ia dipasarkan dalam bentuk kaset dan CD, versi kali ini hanya diterbitkan sebanyak 300 unit dalam bentuk CD (yang disertakan poskad percuma).
Menurut Ajinrabak, idea untuk menerbitkan semula album ini tercetus beberapa tahun yang lalu hasil permintaan dan maklum balas para peminat yang berinteraksi dengannya melalui YouTube atau Facebook. Beliau memang aktif mempromosikan muzik, sketsa pendek, hobi serta hasil-hasil seninya seperti lukisan, kartun dan kraftangan di kedua-dua platform tersebut.
“Saya hairan tetapi excited juga bila ada yang masih berminat nak membeli CD atau kaset album tu walaupun lebih ramai yang syok layan lagu di YouTube atau download free saja. Mungkin trend untuk physical product dah kembali kot? Sejujurnya saya risau untuk reissue album ni kerana dulu ia pernah dicetak rompak. Masa tu kami print 3,000 unit CD dan kaset. Satu hari datang seorang peminat menunjukkan kaset yang dah dicetak rompak. Saya terus stop jual. Saki baki kaset, CD dan poster dari tahun 2000 tu pun masih ada lagi dalam stor,” katanya.
“Tapi, setelah berbincang dengan team saya di Arena Rekod dan yakin dengan potensi ready buyers yang ada, kami bersetuju untuk buat satu projek lockdown (bersempena tempoh Perintah Kawalan Pergerakan atau PKP) dengan Shah Honda Music dan muncul dengan reissue ni,” ujarnya sambal menambah bahawa beliau melihat projek ini sebagai sesuatu yang positif dan boleh menyuntik semangat untuk terus berkarya walaupun diuji dengan pelbagai cabaran dan kekangan yang disebabkan oleh krisis pandemik COVID-19.
Album dan Dokumentari Rock On
Selain projek reissue, Ajinrabak sedang mengumpulkan material untuk merakamkan album solo ketiganya. Malah, enam single terbaharunya sudah pun dilancarkan di YouTube. Single-single tersebut ialah “Cahaya Malam”, “Satu Jiwa Satu Hati”, “Politikus” dan versi alternatifnya, “Babi.” Dua lagi lagu terbaharunya ialah lagu raya bertajuk “Zikir Di Hari Raya” dan “Salam Kemaafan” yang dirakamkan dalam suasana terhad dan tersekat serba-serbi dek PKP.
“Sebenarnya saya sudah mempunyai cukup material untuk merakamkan double album. Situasi serangan halimunan ni ibarat ‘blessing in disguise’ bagi saya. Ia membolehkan saya mempersiapkan diri, bertapa dalam studio dan memilih lagu-lagu yang sesuai selain merancang strategi untuk menerbitkan merchandize di bawah jenama ‘Ajinrabak’,” ujarnya.
“Sepanjang proses ni saya terjumpa demo-demo lama termasuklah oleh artis-artis seperti Sheqal dan band Argentina, Guampas del Sur, yang saya rasa ada commercial value untuk diterbitkan. Future projects, perhaps? Ya, mungkin. Dan selepas PKP, saya juga bercadang untuk mencari band-band untuk projek seperti The Sound of Brickfields Live,” tambahnya lagi yang masih menyimpan hasrat untuk berduet dengan Achmad Albar, penyanyi band legenda Indonesia, Godbless.
Selain muzik, Ajinrabak dan Arena Rekod bakal melancarkan dua buah program untuk saluran YouTube Arena Rekod. Program pertama ialah sebuah dokumentari muzik bertajuk “Rock On-Nothing But The Blues” yang berkisar tentang pengaruh blues dalam evolusi muzik Malaysia. Dokumentari muzik pertama arahan penyanyi ini mengumpulkan pendapat orang lama dan baharu dalam industri muzik seperti Ito Blues Gang, Nasir Jani, Rosli Mohalim, Allahyarham Yazit Search, Muzza, Lyia Meta dan Kaya. Projek tersebut dijayakan pada tahun 2018 di bawah Program Pembiayaan Inkubasi Artis Baharu, sebuah inisiatif di bawah Agensi Pembangunan Ekonomi Seni Budaya (CENDANA).
Program kedua pula ialah siri webisode “Sembang Blues” yang menampilkan isu-isu industri muzik yang jarang diketengahkan media arus perdana seperti dilema pemuzik kelab.
“Projek-projek ini adalah sumbangan kecil kami untuk memartabatkan industri muzik Malaysia. Kedua-duanya sudah disiapkan pada tahun 2019. Tayangan perdana dokumentari itu sudahpun dibuat pada 17 Mac 2019 di Balai Seni Negara.
