Syeikh Idris dilahirkan di sebuah kampung bernama Misfallah di Makkah pada 28 Dzulkaedah 1313 Hijrah bersamaan 10 Mei 1896. Ibu bapa beliau berasal dari Kampung Lubok Merbau, Kuala Kangsar, Perak Darul Ridzuan. Ketika berusia 10 tahun, beliau sudah mampu menghafal kitab Al-Quran sebanyak 16 juzuk, di samping beberapa buah kitab lain. Pada tahun 1323 Hijrah, beliau pulang ke Malaysia bersama-sama keluarga.

Sekembalinya ke Malaysia, beliau meneruskan pengajiannya di Sekolah Melayu Lubok Merbau (kini dikenali Sekolah Kebangsaan Syeikh Mohd Idris Al-Marbawi). Seterusnya beliau melanjutkan pengajiannya di beberapa buah sekolah pondok, antaranya Pondok Wan Mohammad, Bukit Chandan, Kuala Kangsar (kini dikenali sebagai Madrasah Idrisiah), Pondok Tuan Hussien Al-Masudi (Kedah), Pondok Syeikh Ahmad al-Fatani (Bukit Mertajam) dan Pondok Tok Kenali (Kelantan). Setelah menamatkan pengajian, beliau bertugas sebagai guru agama di Perak.

Pada tahun 1924, beliau menyambung pengajian di Universiti Al-Azhar, Mesir, dan berjaya memperoleh Ijazah ‘Aliyah (tertinggi). Beliau merupakan anak jati Perak pertama berjaya melanjutkan pengajiannya di Makkah. Semasa berada di sana, beliau menyusun kamus Arab-Melayu atau dikenali sebagai Kamus Al-Marbawi yang diterbitkan dalam tahun 1937 dan telah diulang cetak lebih daripada 24 kali. Kamus ini pada mulanya disusun oleh tiga orang iaitu beliau sendiri, Syeikh Juned Tola, dan Syeikh Tahir Jalaluddin. Namun, ketika dua tokoh yang terakhir ini kembali ke tanah air, karya itu diteruskan sendiri oleh Syeikh Idris al-Marbawi sebagai pengarang kamus tersebut.
