GAMBUS sebenarnya genre seni muzik yang tersendiri meskipun umum menganggapnya hanya satu elemen dalam persembahan ghazal yang popular di Johor. gambus sebagai genre seni pernah hampir pupus pada akhir 1980-an dan 1990-an kerana penggemarnya semakin berkurangan dan lebih tertumpu dalam kalangan golongan dewasa

Halidan meneliti hasil kerja tangannya

Halidan Ithnin berasal dari Kampung Parit Hailam, Senggarang yang terletak di daerah Batu Pahat, seorang pembuat gambus yang mahir di negeri Johor. Beliau menghasilkan gambus ini secara tradisional tanpa menggunakan peralatan mesin yang moden.

Menurut beliau kemahiran membuat gambus ini dipelajari dengan seorang pembuat gambus yang dikenali sebagai Hassan atau mesra disapa panggilan Wak Kasan. Walaupun Wak Kasan kini telah tiada tetapi Halidan mewarisi bakat Wak Kasan sebagai pembuat gambus sehingga beliau dikenali dengan pembuatan gambus yang kemas dan halus. Sehingga kini tiada siapa yang berminat untuk meneruskan legasi beliau walapun harga sebuah gambus mencecah ribuan ringgit.

* Tokoh muzik gambus di Johor ialah Attan Hassan dan Abdul Kadir Awang, manakala tokoh pembuat gambus pula adalah Hassan Othman.

* Kumpulan Gambus Nurulhilal berasal dari Rengit, Batu Pahat antara pelopor muzik gambus dan banyak menghiburkan masyarakat dalam acara keraian terutama perkahwinan, majlis khatam al-Quran dan berkhatan.

* Alat muzik gambus berbentuk oval pada permukaannya dan ia terdapat dalam pelbagai jenis daripada gambus bertali tiga sehingga 12 tali.

* Sekitar tahun 1800, alat muzik ini dibawa ke Tanah Melayu dan paling popular di negeri Johor serta masyarakat Brunei di Sabah.

    a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and
    said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to her ear and screamed.

    There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear.
