KUALA LUMPUR, 22 DISEMBER – Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) hari ini mengumumkan kerjasama antara Pusat Penyelidikan Biopemprosesan dan Biopenghasilan (Bioprocessing and Biomanufacturing Research Centre atau BBRC) dan syarikat bioteknologi PNT Research. Kedua-dua pihak akan berusaha untuk meningkatkan keberkesanan bahan-bahan berfungsi (functional ingredients) untuk menyumbang ke arah masyarakat dengan penuaan yang sihat. Kerjasama ini akan menyelami potensi mikroalga untuk mencegah tekanan oksidatif.

Tekanan oksidatif seringkali dikaitkan dengan penyakit kronik, seperti barah, kencing manis, penyakit Alzheimer dan penyakit kardiovaskular

Tekanan oksidatif disebabkan oleh kelebihan radikal bebas dalam sel-sel tubuh dan boleh merosakkan sel, protein, dan DNA.

Ia membawa kepada penuaan pramatang dan semakin kerap berlaku disebabkan oleh pelbagai faktor termasuk penuaan, perubahan gaya hidup, tekanan dan pencemaran.
